Kabale is a town build on hills with cool climate, many waters and beautiful green landscape. It is located close by one of the boarders to Rwanda, at the South-West of Uganda. It is the capital of a district and a commercial centre.
One of the records of the city is the unfortunate numbers of street children; those that literally have their home and lives on the streets. They gather from different villages and sub-counties of the region while fleeing away from poverty, neglecting or as a result of bad influences. They end up at the closest big town in search of a refuge and an opportunity. Many of them find consequently their way to the huge capital that counts 10.000.000 of citizens, consumed in the unanimity and under the law of the strongest that rules on the streets. The street children of Kabale live mainly around the garbage heaps of the town. The smell and the environment is beyond description but they seem to be acquainted with it as they find there some things to sell and survive. They live in groups, engage in gum sniffing, marijuana smoking and the like. Drugs are called ‘the blanket of the street’. They offer an escape from the cold during the night and the abuse of the hard street life. At the same time, they are related to violence, criminality and gang life.
Several organisations are doing a credible job in Kabale. After 12 years serving children in Kisoro as the only street children organisation, Koinonia assessed the need to start engaging with the street children in Kabale.
In December 2012, the team started with weekly feeding programmes at the court yard of the local partner, Kabale Full Gospel Church. The initiative soon developed to daily feeding.
Feeding is the place that gathers the street children together and offers an opportunity to get to know them, understand the reasons that brings them to the streets but is also the first step to help them get out of the streets. The heart of feeding is the reading of the Bible and the prayer. It is amazing how children from all ages can understand that language and that no matter what the struggles of life are, and even if their own parents have failed them, God loves them, wants and can help them.
A few months later, one room was availed as a shelter in the church compound for the children and one room for the staff. It was a solution out of a need, that served for quite a long time with all the challenges involved.
As lovely as children may be, street life is a tough attitude that finds deep roots in their hearts, like a plant that gets hold of the ground and does not want to let go…
Getting children out of the streets is one thing. Getting the street out of the children is a different thing and that involves time, patience and a procedure. We call that rehabilitation.
In March 2015, the rehabilitation home of Koinonia in Kabale started in rented house at the hills of Kabale.
Currently, a number of children arehelped in the home and others have been meanwhile resettled at their families of origin (where possible). They are supported and supervised through their homes on their way to self-sustainability.
Education, skill training or a combination of both is a very important part in the process while the spiritual and socio-psychological support is the other part of the story throughout.
Some children, especially those that have not been long time on the streets or those that have reached an age limit beyond our ability to admit, are helped directly from the street to their home. Every case is different and our approach takes account of the individual.
The age of the children varies from 5 to 16 years in the home and goes far beyond that for services extended outside the rehab home.
This project offers:
- A weekly meal for the street children in Kabale.
- Shelter and education, for admitted children.
- Opportunity for basic, secondary or vocational education for each child under the care of the organization.
- Social services towards the family and family reunion where possible.
- Support, guidance and follow-up of children that have been placed in families.

Kabale is een stad gebouwd tussen heuvels met een koel klimaat, veel neerslag en een prachtig groen landschap. Het ligt vlakbij één van de grensposten van Rwanda, in het zuidwesten van Oeganda. Het is de hoofdstad van een wijk en een commercieel centrum.
Eén van de recordcijfers van de stad is helaas het aantal straatkinderen; degenen die letterlijk hun thuis en leven op straat hebben. Ze komen uit verschillende dorpen en sub-provincies van de regio vluchtend voor armoede, verwaarlozing of als gevolg van slechte invloeden. Ze komen terecht in de dichtstbijzijnde grote stad op zoek naar een toevluchtsoord en een kans. Velen van hen vinden daarna hun weg naar de enorme hoofdstad Kampala die 10.000.000 burgers telt, geconsumeerd in de anonimiteit en onder de wet van de sterkste die op straat heerst. Straatkinderen uit Kabale staan in de hoofdstad op de tweede plaats in aantal.
De straatkinderen van Kabale leven voornamelijk rond de vuilnisbelten van de stad. De geur en de omgeving zijn moeilijk te omschrijven, maar ze lijken er gewend aan te geraken, ze zoeken en vinden daar dingen om te verkopen en te overleven. Ze leven in groepen, houden zich bezig met snuiven van lijm, roken van marihuana en dergelijke. Drugs wordt ‘het verzachtende deken van de straat’ genoemd. Het biedt een ontsnapping aan de koude tijdens de nacht en het misbruik van het harde straatleven. Tegelijkertijd zet het ze aan tot geweld, criminaliteit en bevordert dit het bendeleven.
Verschillende organisaties doen goed werk in Kabale. Na 12 jaar als enige straatkinderenorganisatie in Kisoro te hebben gediend, beoordeelde Koinonia dat er nood was om ook contact te zoeken met de straatkinderen in Kabale.
In december 2012 begon het team met een wekelijks maaltijdbedelingsprogramma op de binnenplaats van de lokale partner, Kabale Full Gospel Church. Het initiatief ontwikkelde zich al snel tot een dagelijkse voedselbedeling.
Dit is de plek waar de straatkinderen samenkomen, dit biedt gelegenheid om hen te leren kennen en de redenen te begrijpen die hen naar de straat geleid hebben, maar het is ook de eerste stap om hen van de straat weg te halen. Het kloppend hart van het maaltijdbedelingsprogramma is het lezen van de Bijbel en gebed. Het is verbazingwekkend hoe kinderen van alle leeftijden deze hoopvolle taal kunnen begrijpen en dat het niet uitmaakt wat de stormen van het leven zijn. Zelfs als hun eigen ouders er niet in geslaagd zijn hen op te voeden, God houdt van hen allen, Hij wil en kan hen helpen!
Een paar maanden later konden we één kamer gebruiken als verblijfplaats bij de lokale kerk voor de kinderen en één kamer voor het personeel. Het was een tijdelijke oplossing uit noodzaak, die een hele tijd heeft gediend met alle uitdagingen van dien.
Hoe liefelijk de kinderen ook mogen zijn, het straatleven geeft hen een stoere houding met diepe wortels in hun hart, als een plant die vasthoudt aan zijn grond en moeilijk te ontwortelen is…
Kinderen van de straat af halen is één ding. De straatmentaliteit uit de kinderen halen is iets totaal anders en dat vergt tijd, geduld en een procedure. We noemen dat rehabilitatie.
In maart 2015 is het rehabilitatiehuis van Koinonia in Kabale gestart in een huurhuis op de heuvels van Kabale.
Op dit moment wordt een aantal kinderen in ons huis geholpen en anderen zijn inmiddels (waar mogelijk) hervestigd bij hun oorspronkelijke familie. Zo worden ze in hun thuisomgeving ondersteund en begeleid op weg naar zelfredzaamheid.
Onderwijs, vaardigheidstraining of een combinatie van beide is een zeer belangrijk onderdeel van dit proces, terwijl de spirituele en sociaalpsychologische ondersteuning het andere deel van het verhaal is.
Sommige kinderen, vooral kinderen die niet zo lang op straat geleefd hebben of kinderen die omwille van hun leeftijd niet toegelaten worden, kunnen rechtstreeks van de straat naar hun thuis hervestigd worden en van daaruit worden geholpen en opgevolgd. Ieder kind en elke situatie is anders en onze aanpak houdt rekening met het individu.
De leeftijd van kinderen in ons huis varieert van 5 tot 16 jaar en gaat daarboven verder voor diensten buiten het rehabilitatiehuis.
Dit project biedt:
- Een wekelijkse maaltijd voor de straatkinderen in Kabale.
- Opvang en onderwijs, voor toegelaten kinderen.
- Mogelijkheid tot basis-, secundair of beroepsonderwijs voor elk kind onder de hoede van de organisatie.
- Sociale dienstverlening aan het gezin en familiereünie waar mogelijk.
- Ondersteuning, begeleiding en opvolging van kinderen die in gezinnen zijn geplaatst.
